What Is Almond Milk?

Almond Milk

Almonds are some of the tastiest and healthiest nuts available and they can be incorporated into a lot of foods, adding that extra crunch, texture, and flavour. They are used mostly in the creation of desserts like pies, ice cream, chocolate, cookies, and many others, but they can also be found in cereal, bread, trail mixes, and other snacks. Not many know this, but almonds can also be used in making yummy almond milk! Organic almond milk is a great alternative for dairy milk and is beneficial to those who drink it.

History

Almonds come primarily through the Mediterranean areas and were spread across Europe and the US via human transportation. They were originally poisonous once their seeds get damaged, but through domestication and mutation, almonds finally became non-toxic.

Almond milk has actually been around for centuries! It has been a prominent part of both Christianity and Islam because it is a suitable drink during Lent and other fasting events of those religions since it is the fruit of a plant and not an animal product. Originally known as amygdakate (the sweet almond, Amygdalus dulcis), almond milk was also a staple in kitchens during the medieval era because it lasts longer than cow’s milk, which could not be stored for a long time without spoiling. After all, there weren’t any refrigerators yet during that time!

Milk from animals like cows, sheep, and goats usually becomes bitter after a certain time. Therefore, it was more frequently used to make cheese and butter, leaving more room for the consumption of almond milk, both as a drink and a form of flavouring.

Nutritional facts

Almonds are rich sources of various vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, so drinking organic almond milk is a good way to get them. You can get calcium, protein, copper, selenium, manganese, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, fibre, zinc, and phosphorus. Because of the natural nutrition of almonds, there is no need to fortify almond milk. It is also low in calories and fat, making it a healthier alternative to other kinds of milk.

How it is different from other kinds of milk?

The most common kind of milk is the one made from cows, but milk can also come from goats and sheep. However, not everyone can drink animal milk especially those who are lactose intolerant (cannot digest the sugar lactose) or those who have allergies to gluten and casein, so almond milk is a possible alternative. It does not have any cholesterol, casein, lactose, gluten, and saturated fats. Even if whole cow’s milk is also highly nutritious, it is also high in fat and saturated fat as well as containing some cholesterol. In addition, dairy milk is also often fortified with other vitamins like A and D, whereas almond milk is already naturally rich in a wide range of nutrients needed by the body.

Other popular alternatives to dairy milk are soy and rice. Soy milk is very rich in protein and is also lactose free. However, like dairy milk, it is also often fortified with other nutrients such as Vitamin D and calcium. Rice milk, on the other hand, is low in protein and does not contain much nutrition, so it requires more fortification of calcium, Vitamin D, and other nutrients.

In tropical areas, a popular form of refreshment is coconut milk, which is high in fibre, as well as vitamins and minerals that maintain the body’s immunity against viruses and infections. However, unlike almond milk, it has high levels of saturated fats that can raise cholesterol levels.

There is also oat milk, which is rich in vitamins A and D, iron, calcium, fibre, and some other minerals. However, it can be high in sugar and may also have gluten, unlike almond milk which is gluten-free.

Where to get almond milk

Almond milk can be made in the comfort of your own kitchen or you can easily buy it in grocery stores and supermarkets. When making it at home, you can simply grind almonds with water using a blender. In stores, it is usually pre-packaged in special long-life cartons, making it easier to store and last longer. Some popular brands include Blue Diamond Almond, Pacific Natural Foods Naturally Almond Non-Dairy Beverage, Almond Dream, and Silk Almond Milk. These brands come in a variety of flavors. For example, Silk Almond Milk offers original, unsweetened, chocolate, and vanilla almond milk.

So if you’re looking for a milk alternative that has less fats or is lactose-free, almond milk is the best choice for you. Not only is it highly nutritious, it tastes good too.
